12 Years a Slave wins Best Picture at the Oscars

On Sunday,12 Years A Slave took home the Oscar for Best Picture.

In his acceptance speech, Steve McQueen dedicated the award to those who have endured slavery, past and present, highlighting the persistence of slavery today.

The Global Slavery Index published in October 2013 estimates that 29.8 million people remain enslaved worldwide. Approximately 5,600 to 6,200 people are in slavery in Canada.
